A Tale of Two........Bunnies
Within 30 minutes of arriving at Mac's Island, the focus became two young (~7 weeks) rabbits. Justin and Maris had found two domestic bunnies wandering the lawn. Emilie and Angie named them; "Domino" and "Harold". The bunnies were later named "Mio" and "Max" (sounds like Mac's) after the two special places we visited this trip. Max and Mio both had ticks and fleas and their ears were chewed up. Max also had an injured foreleg. Our family, especially the children, keep an eye on the bunnies the whole week as I would oversee their care while feigning indifference as to the future of these fur-balls. The bunnies grew about 50% that week and Mio's leg began to heal. Meanwhile Hawks and an occasional eagle hovered above making me nervous. At our last big diner, I told the family that it was time to start packing and gathering up their stuff and then told them to keep an eye on the rabbits and say "goodbye". They didn't seem happy with this. I had secretly built a carrier that fit between the van seats to take them home with us the next morning.
After loading up the van, the kids searched for the rabbits. Mio was easy to find, as he never traveled far with his leg problem. Max was hiding and took awhile to locate delaying departure 30 minutes. The bunnies traveled well and survived a stop for antique shopping and a return to Dark Horse. We got home on Saturday late and set up a home and cage on Sunday. Monday they went to the Bunny Veterinarian. At this time of posting, after being home for two weeks, Max and Mio have doubled their size, no longer have ticks and fleas, been treated for Coccidia, and Max's broken foot has almost completely healed.
