Spring Break 2009

Washington, DC

Once again I share the travels of the Schiess clan. This keeps our friends and relatives up-to-date with us while also giving the family a chance to relive some of our memories and good times. This year might well be our last family "Spring Break". Maris will be of to college next year and will have a separate break from her siblings. I had always promised a trip to DC as it is not that expensive and I wanted to provide an educational tour before I forgot what I know about this town.

Both parents were able to get time off this year and wanted to do something "all together" again. With late notice we planned the trip, dropped the dog and bunnies at the kennel, rented a van*, over-fed the cats and headed East to Washington, DC. I had little sleep and had injured my hip so we did not get to DC the first day. The second day after a few stops in Pennsylvania and West Virginia we made it do Laurel, Maryland where we unloaded to a motel to rest for the early rise for tour the next morning.

Day 1 - Off to a bad start - Do to an accident on I-95 south we were routed to Route 1 to head into DC. My eagle-eyed daughter Maris was my navigator guiding me to the "Old Post Office" where our tour would start. Heading west on New York Ave SW we got behind a black SUV. When the light turned green we made our left turn following this SUV. Two blocks later, Maris told me to get into the left lane to turn left in two blocks. As I got into the lane, I told her that I needed to get back into the right lane because an ambulance was coming. I got into the right and the white truck/van with flashing red and blue lights in the grill got behind me and gave a whoop on the siren and signaled me to pull over. I think USSS, UP(D?), WHB stands for United States Secret Service, Unmarked Patrol, White House Battalion. Supposedly we ran several traffic lights and resisted pulling over for a emergency vehicle. Something not done close to the White House! Washington street travel is tough (A, B, C, D,....SW, NE, streets. and bunch of traffic circles and one way streets) but since we had two people in front to check streets and signs and since we were going slowly and had other cars in front and behind us the whole way down the street we think it was the other SUV that took off and ran the light. His was black and ours was dark purple. Oh well, we parked the car and finished the day. However we took the Metro the rest of the week.

*those of you who follow our travels know that my van is no longer trustworthy and would probably not have made the trip.

Around the Mall - Washington Monument, The White House, Lincoln, FDR, and Jefferson Memorials, WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Memorials and the Holocaust Memorial Museum.
