- This place has two names, and you'll find both in the phone book. Go with
Schießstätte (SHEE-State-Uh) because at least it's shorter. Königlich
Bayerische Biergarten alludes to the royal roots of the shooting club that
sponsors the beer garden as more or less a side business. Schießstätte is
derived from "schießen" which means "to shoot" in German.(Be careful to
pronounce it properly with the long "eeee". If you pronounce it as though it
were "eye" people will laugh at you.)"The club is still active, although entry
is by invitation only. The beer garden is open to all. It has plenty of shade
and fixed wooden tables which are always an indication of a genuine Bavarian
beer garden with a lot of tradition. The Beer Drinker's Guide to Munich
recommends a secret backdoor shortcut (extremely convenient and accessible
from the Mittersendling S-Bahn stop) to get to Schießstätte. The beer garden
by either name gets 4 beers.
