Mar. 15, International Maris Day!
Did you know that March, 15 is International Maris Day? Yes, the day after Pi (π) day is International Maris Day – Mar 15. Get it? This was the invention of Maris S. from Indiana in 2000. After the International Maris Day celebration of 2010, it was decided to collect a list of Maris from around the world. Add a Maris to the List.
Mar·is [Mar-is] From the Sea, Of the Sea.
What does it take to be considered a “Maris”? You must be a living thing and one of you given names would be “Maris” For example, Roger Maris would be a “Maris” (Surname – Family = Maris). Maris Smith would also be a “Maris” (fore name – first name = Maris). Will give any fictional Maris credit but won’t add them to the registry. Maris the Great may be a Maris but I am too afraid to ask!
Reality-
The most famous Maris is Roger Maris - an American baseball player who spent most of his career with the New York Yankees (1960-1967). In 1961 he surpassed Babe Ruth's single-season record of 60 home runs and was named the American League's most valuable player for the second year in a row.

Fantasy-
Maris (or Mariś) was the Etruscan god of agriculture and fertility later borrowed by the Romans as a war/agricultural god Mars and equated with Greek Ares by interpretatio romana. Some of his known epithets are Mariś Halna, Mariś Husrnana (literally "Maris the Child") and Mariś Isminthians.
Maris Brood was a female Zabrak Jedi Padawan, who survived the initial stages of the Great Jedi Purge. She spent many years in hiding with Jedi Master Shaak Ti on the planet Felucia. After her master's death, she was absorbed by the dark side of the Force, darkening the whole planet. After she captured Senator Bail Prestor Organa, she was hunted down by Galen Marek, who defeated her in combat and spared her life, leaving her to escape the darkness of the planet. http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Maris_Brood

"Maris, we are among the last of the Jedi. While we live, the Order survives. I cannot allow you to be captured or killed by the Empire."
Maris Crane is Niles Crane's wife for the early seasons of the show Frasier. Maris is immensely wealthy, spoiled, dominating and neurotic. It is also implied that she is pathologically emaciated and apparently cannot survive without regular treatments. She is never seen on the show except in one episode where her shadow is seen through a shower curtain, and in "Rooms with a View" where she appears in Niles' memory, almost completely covered by bandages after surgery. She is arguably the most notable of the show's never seen characters and often the subject of many jokes. Maris was born in 1952 in Seattle. Her father was known as "The Commodore" and she also has at least two sisters. As a child Maris was quite chubby, but then she started losing weight and was soon very skinny. She stole a crucifix from the Vatican when she was young. She has a sister named Bree, who was born with only one nostril; she is mentioned as Fraiser's date in one episode. Maris lived in her family's mansion, which has been in the family for four generations after they made their fortune from urinal cakes (although officially her fortune comes from timber). She met her husband, Niles Crane, when he stopped to help her as she was banging on the electric gates to her home. They got married in 1986. In 1993 Maris and Niles helped Frasier hire Daphne Moon, Niles' future wife. Two years later, she went to New York without telling Niles, causing him to worry. This caused her to throw him out of the house when he stood up to her, and they stayed separated for 2 years. Maris had an affair with their marital therapist, Dr Bernard Shenkman, in 1998, which caused Niles to finally divorce her. Maris carried on being a Seattle socialite for a few years, until in 2003 Maris got herself involved with an Argentinean polo player, Esteban de Rojo, who was violent. Maris killed Esteban in self defense. She stayed in jail for a few months. In early 2004 her defense trial was due to take place, but she escaped to her family's private island, from which she could not be extradited. In one of the scenes she has apparently been enclosed in a wooden packing case. At the end of the series, Maris was still living there. (source – Wikipedia)
